i think the urban sprawl only bring a negative effect on Malaysian cities. The urban sprawl majorly bring unhealthy environment toward people and traffic congestion along the road of cities.
i also agree that it also destroy natural habitats and soil permeability due to the building and construction of the enlargement of the city.
that why i think, the measurement control over this urban sprawl was important so that we could sustain the development and limitation toward urban sprawl.
plus the local, urban and regional authorities must cooperative in order to manage promoting sustainable development

  4. assalamualaikum DR ANUAR..

well yes..i agree with that statement. Urban sprawl is a threat to a city. It will affect the city and make city worse. When there is too many urban sprawl, that will make that city too compact, high density and crowded. Soon, the city will be facing a lot of other problems like traffic jams, concrete-jungle, and air pollution created by factories and vehicles. These problems will make the city become unsafe, thus dangerous for living.

So precaution need to be taken before it is too late. Well, planner's job is not to build here and there, but we also need to aim for a balance development for people, building and environment to be linked with each other. Then a perfect city will be born.

A good planner does not predict and provide to a city, but more importantly is predict and prevent so that no problems will happen in future. we as planner need to be far-sighted, know what are we doing and the effect, it is good or bad or does it give benefit.

Thats all for my opinion. Sorry if anything I wrote is hurting u anywhere.

  6. Hi Dr. Anuar,

I think, there are both, positive and negative aspects for "URBAN SPRAWL". the negative aspects is about,it give negative connotations due to the health and environmental issues.urban sprawl becomes trend to the most cities in m'sia with rapid development that create more pollution, suffer more traffic facilities and linked with increased obesity.
the cities might be uncontrolled sprawl development and facing with a lot of problems.

However, the positive impact of urban sprawl brings an improved quality of life for population spaces and growth of a local economy.

to overcome this problems, make sure that our state and country planning agencies, conduct reviews of local land use plans and zoning laws to protect sprawl in order to maintain the sustainable developments in the cities.

  7. Salam Dr. Anuar,

It is undeniable that URBAN SPRAWL considered as a threat not only to human beings but also to the environment. All of us know that we are now living in one of the developing country in the world but to over-build something is just not the right way.Frankly speaking I think the government should restrict the law for the future development(public and private sector).People nowadays seem do not care anymore about the long-term effects and make 'the highest profit' as the major thoughts in their minds. For example,in my hometown,Georgetown, the building congestion are crazy. You can see buildings and upcoming development everywhere. The building congestion will make the road become narrower and eventually lead to traffic congestion especially during peak hours and public holidays. So as a planner should be able to think out of the box and provide alternatives as much as possible so that our quality of life is guaranteed.
    Thank you.

About urban sprawl, the main thing that I want to decide here is about location. We know that the effect of planning land use on the earlier can be affected on the future land use.
Urban sprawl is an example of the future effect. I’m sure that urban sprawl has many bad things apart from its advantages. Although it can make high accessibility, many low cost housing area and else, but people will lose many thing especially their environment and relationship between them. So, urban sprawl should be controlled smartly to make a comfortable life for people. I also think the various demand from people can kill our city.

That’s all my comment, thank you

from my opinion, urban sprawl can be a treat when the planners does not take a regulation for development control. urban sprawl exactly spoiled the city. this is because a lot of effects and implication to our city and lifestyle. for examples environment aspect. there will be no connection between human and environment anymore since a lot of buildings and industrial park conduct the human activities. so it create a bad pollution and also create bad city in human life.so planner should take initiative to think about city, environment and human life.

I am totally agree that urban sprawl is actually a threat to our town. It has been considered as threat because of the quickly-sprawling to our surrounding out of our realizing.

As you mentioned above, top 3 among impacts of urban sprawl in Malaysia City are all contributes by the vehicles. All those things may cause the bad impacts to the community and even to the environment.

As a town planner-to be,i really take serious of this sorts of issues because some people do not ever care and concern about the problem that city faced nowadays. Gonverment should more restricts on the law and principles provided so that our town will become more high quality sustainable development towards world's eyes.

In my opinion, urban sprawl is a threat to the country especially for the planner. This is because,as a future planner, a lot of aspects that we have to consider as the population increases.

Eventhough a lot of ways have been introduced to the world on how to solve this problem, there is no right or wrong. For example, metro town, satellite town and suburbans have been introduced to solve this urban sprawl.

So,I think we can't fully depend on the existing alternatives as the millenium era has been started. That's all from me.

In my opinion, regarding to urban sprawl in our country, certainly not under control. It is caused by many factors. Clearly, it is a multifaceted concept, which includes the spreading outwards of a city ...

This problem has caused many negative effects arise, such as traffic congestion, especially in areas with dense development such as Johor Bahru, KL, Klang n etc..In addition, the residents also feel the trace of the effects of an outbreak of this city.

As can be seen, this problem like didnt has any solution .. however, we as future planners have to find the best way to solve this problem, not add more problems of urban areas, especially in the urban sprawl issues..

  25. for me,, i think the answer is YES because it gives many effect to the human and surroundings. especially in modern cities, the consumption of land for development is less because of the past development.

but as for the rural areas, urban sprawl is NOT a threat since it can be controlled and we can undo the mistakes that we had done in developed cities. plus rural areas got plenty of land to be developed and also to be conserved and preserved as well.

as for modern cities, the vacant land is limited thus, it is still approved to be developed and this will effect in less green area in modern cities. that is why the problems kept coming such as the increase in respiratory problems, traffic congestion, and pollution.
furthermore without planned drainage system it will give flash flood especially for modern cities.
thus, urban sprawl is a threat to the modern cities but less a threat to the rural areas. thank you. (^^)v

urban sprawl is said when the rate of land consumed for urban purposes exceeds the rate of population growth. Yes, i am totally agree that these issue is considered as a threat to the city as it bring many bad impact to the city rather than good. The example are lost of tradisional villages(pocket development),loss of green area and imbalance population.
From my view i think Basically, the main course of urban sprawl happened is from the rapid spread of land use activities development and less controlling in development base. Rapidly growing city to the border area due to the influence of various, increasing of land values in urban areas, a sharp increase in urban population and influence from transportation systems.
As a planner our task is to create a good cities,so solution should be make.In order to avoid such phenomena continue to happen, the cities need to be properly planned and managed so that their growth or expansion can be controlled and managed in a sustainable manner. Besides,i think to curb sprawling development is through the delineation of urban growth or development limits. This means that the limit of towns and cities need to be studied and identified, so that urban development can be directed to areas which are identified and specified suitable for such development.

    DR ANUAR,

Regarding on this issue, urban sprawl getting serious if theres no action taken to curb it. As we can see in Malaysia, urban sprawl affected many aspects. The most things that we should concern about is pollution. We often heard about implementation of Sustainable Development and Garden City concept in Malaysia, but do we think that its impossible if Malaysia having a serious urban sprawl development? I dont think so.. I admit that urban sprawl has the pros and cons but seems like theres more negative impact rather than positive. We can see how urban sprawl effect ecology, and social in Malaysia.
Maybe planner before does not care much about urban sprawl and now this issue become main issue in planning.
As a planner,we should planned for present and future. Limitation in planning maybe is needed to controlled urban sprawl.
Remember, planning is not only about development, but planning is about how to achieve sustainable development with combination in aspects of ecology (natural) , economic and social equity. Nothing impossible if we think it is possible..
That all my opinion regarding on this issue.

In my opinion,I totally agree that urban sprawl are not good because it can give many bad effects. For example,as shown in your survey, the HIGHEST are 89.0%,cause increase in air pollution. While, the LOWEST one are exacerbation of social and economic division,67.7%.So,as both effects are exceed half percent,we can conclude that urban sprawl are bad and need to be threat immediately(if can).

  34. Selamat Sejahtera Dr.Anuar,

In my opinion, urban sprawl is really a threat in our country. Now,our country is facing an environment crisis which is losing green space, farmland and also the important ecosystem. Besides the impacts which shown above, i also feel that urban sprawl is also one of the land use choices that are strongly affect public health. I remember that Dr.Anuar said before,"Is urban spawl create a fat city?" Yes,indeed. Urban sprawl produces so called neighborhoods where there are rare parks and rarer sidewalk. People who live in suburban neighborhoods are absolutely heavier and less fit than urban counterparts. Suburban lifestyle created by urban sprwal will makes people fat. Therefore, i think that as planner, we should try to control the urban development in order to create a healthier city. Planner should make sure that what idea they planned is environmental friendly.

    sekian.....

Talking about urban sprawl , im not one of good people to give my opinion about urban sprawl .But i think urban sprawl is one of problems that many country face . they need to spend lots of money to rebuilt the town as there are many problems occour when urban sprawl come.this happen in our own country MALAYSIA Kuala Lumpur where the conflic happen at Kg.Baru....thus,planner should take first step to every new town and plan a better master plan that can be the guide line to all people to extend their town ...

  38. Salam sejahtera Dr.Anur,
Yes,i definitely agree that urban sprawl is a threat to our country.Urban sprawl brings many effects and problems that cannot be overcome easily. The open space may decrease and replace by buildings..but this has affect the natural environment. Most of the problems have affect human healthy life. But what and who a place is plan for?? HUMAN...So,an alternative and rasional action should be taken when planning a place to maintain sustainable development. A place for people to live is planned by people...so why not treat ourselves better?!! Create a quality living environment and prevent urban sprawl!
    Thanks:)

  40. Assalamualaikum,salam perancang kpd Doktor..

  41. Assalamualaikum Dr,

Today as I casually browsed through your blog, this forum caught my attention (actually I was looking for your article on motivasi diri). No doubt we have so many plans and guidelines and planning standards to abide by, which if followed, will ideally contribute to the formation of dream cities, cities that we definitely choose to live in - beautiful homes amidst lush greenery with shaded avenues segregated from the motor vehicle highways and biways, where we can dwell healthily and safely, all within walking distances to the sufficiently provided for neighbourhood centres, and very accessible to our workplaces via efficient and reliable public transportation. That is quite in line with Ebenezer Howard's aspirations decades ago. Yes, we are taught to practise and impose these planning ideals through impartial use of many planning tools so thoughtfully prepared, thanks to planning experts. But in this real life, real chaotic world, things are not as easy... Although we always look at urban sprawl in the negative lights, we at the Local Authorities find that urban sprawl is inevitable, otherwise our towns and cities become very stagnant. An increasing population demands for an equally increasing housing, work place, and facilities. Logical isn't it? To me, it is not the urban sprawl that impose the threats to the well-beings of the community, it is the extent to which we are capable of enforcing control on the development within the sprawl. In that matter, are we capable of handling the situation? It is very normal that we at the local authorities are accused by the Government for not practising "proper" planning... but ironically, many a times the local authorities are also condemned for this so-called "proper planning" for various appalling reasons, many being these plannings don't concur with the aspirations of certain quarters and because of political interventions. Greenfields in the agricultural zones are turned into extensive and intensive mixed developments because "the ministers want their constituencies to have a new township" during their office. And because of this "heroic" acts we at the local authorities finally succumb to their yearning for support during the PRU, whilst deep in our hearts we know that these are wrong planning-wise. So, should anyone of you ladies and gentlemen of the future planners somehow become political leaders, please heed our cries... Let us do our jobs as implementors and you do your parts as the decision makers... It's a viscious cycle. Walau bagaimanapun, there must be an equal concern on the preservation and conservation of environmentally sensitive areas (KSAS). But i think if an urban sprawl comes together with higher technologies of "green living" (e.g. carbon free zones etc.), then why not?

  44. We can have the two different attitudes toward the "Urban Sprawl", the first, we can look it as a threat that brings only negative effects with itself, and the second, we can look it as an opportunity.
I prefer the second attitude, since I believe that any threat has an opportunity in itself and we should not consider a thing as totally bad and with negative effects, I guess the urban sprawl has many potential in itself that we can use of them and by making good plans, we can convert it to an opportunity. Urban sprawl force us to look again to the city we are living on it, to our surrounding environment, to our ecosystem, etc. And finally the urban sprawl makes us to revise our way of thought, our vision, our attitudes over our urban environment and it may lead to change our policies.
